UGDSB students and staff celebrate Earth Month

April 28, 2023

GUELPH, ON – Upper Grand District School Board schools have had a busy few weeks, celebrating Earth Month this April.

Check out some of the great ways our students and staff have celebrated the Earth this month.

Ross R MacKay PS hosted a spirit week for Earth Week with several activities to keep students engaged and informed about environmental issues. Activities included encouraging students and staff to wear Earth-inspired colours, a bake sale to raise money for school planters and gardens, a day for litterless lunches and an assembly about the importance of protecting trees. Prizes were awarded to the student most dressed like the Earth in each class and at the end of the week each student got to take home a small evergreen sapling to plant at home.

At Princess Margaret PS, students and staff were also encouraged to wear Earth colours the Friday before Earth Day. Students also tended to their indoor vegetable garden and created Earth Month themed art.

At Wellington Heights SS, the CELP and SVN3E classes collected trash and recyclables from around the Mount Forest community on April 12, 2023. As part of the human waste unit and for Earth Month, students collected 148.3kg of garbage and 14kg of recyclables. What a great accomplishment.

Orangeville District SS is doing their part to help the environment. On April 19, they announced that the foods room would be using biodegradable cutlery and napkins to help ODSS reduce their waste.

At John Black PS, students and staff spent the day on April 20 doing a community clean up. As part of the community clean up, students have been learning about sustainability in their classrooms.

Kindergarten students at Rockwood Centennial PS celebrated Earth Month on April 21 by helping to clean up the school yard.

The weather on April 21 made it easy for students to help pick up garbage. At Erin PS, students helped clean the community by picking up litter.

Grade 5 students at Kortright Hills PS learned about the Earth through the water cycle game. This game simulates to students what it is like having to carry water to your community every day.

At Willow Road PS, students in Darwin Diebel’s grade 7 class were the recipients of the Golden Globe award at the April assembly. This award is given out monthly to a class to recognize them for their recycling efforts. Honourable mentions went to the grade 3/4 class, 2/3 class and the Life Skills class. Great job everyone at Willow Road PS.
