UGDSB students participate in Skills Ontario competitions

GUELPH, Ontario – Earlier this week the Upper Grand District School Board had students competing in Toronto in both the Provincial Elementary Skills Competition and the Provincial Secondary Skills Competition.
Elementary Skills Competition
On May 1, 2023, many UGDSB elementary students participated in the Provincial Elementary Skills Competition at the Toronto Congress Centre. This event sees students from across the province competing against each other in various STEM related categories.
UGDSB students brought home medals in four different categories:
- Bringing home the gold medal in Vex Robotics grades 7/8 were students Maxim K, Julian P, Cameron C and Carter D from JD Hogarth PS, they were coached by James Fielding and Dylan Gordon.
- Bringing home the gold medal in Green Industries grades 7/8 were students Avery S, Foster C and Mohammad B from Rickson Ridge PS. They were coached by Mike Kumbhani.
- Bringing home the silver medal in Vex Robotics grade 4-6 were students Jaden P, Lucas J and Jack O from Waverley Drive PS. They were coached by Michelle Steele and Scott Calverly.
- Bringing home the bronze medal in Lego Mechanics grades 4-6 were students Jasper S, Sam B-W, John F and Gayatri T-H from Central PS. They were coached by Kate Brennagh.
Secondary Skills Competition
On May 1 and 2, 2023, 43 UGDSB secondary students along with their 18 coaches participated in 22 different competitions at the Secondary Skills Ontario Competition at the Toronto Congress Centre. Of the 43 participants from our board several brought home medals.
Secondary UGDSB students brought home medals in four different categories:
- Bringing home the gold medal in 3D Character Animation were students Landon H and Mark R from Centre Wellington DHS. They were coached by Eric Greig.
- Bringing home the bronze medal in Electrical Installations was Will M from Orangeville DSS. Coached by IBEW and Joanne Harris.
- Bringing home the silver in Precision Machining was Riley Z from Guelph CVI. Coached by Matt Lyle.
- Bringing home the gold in Workplace Safety was Rachel D from Centre Wellington DHS. She was coached by Jenny Ritter.
Landon, Mark and Rachel from CWDHS will be advancing to the National Skills Competition in Winnipeg later this month.
Congratulations to all of the UGDSB students who participated in these competitions and those who brought home medals. The achievements of UG students are a testament to their talent and perseverance. Thank you to the coaches for your hard work during and leading up to Skills.
