UGDSB students pledge to ‘Live Free’ in support of student nutrition programs

March 2, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – How would you feel if you had to go an entire day without your cellphone or favourite social media network?

What about if you had to go an entire day without food?

On Friday, students in schools across the Upper Grand DSB participated in Live Free Day, which encourages people to live without something they may take for granted in order to show support for those who live without every day.

The Live Free campaign is organized by the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington. Money raised during the campaign goes to the charity’s Food and Friends program, which supports 106 student nutrition programs in Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph.

According to CFGW, one in six local students arrive at school hungry, without the proper nutrition to get them through the day. Food & Friends gives any student who needs it a space where they are included and can have access to healthy food.

On Friday morning, John F. Ross CVI held a Live Free breakfast celebration, with volunteers from the community cooking up a healthy breakfast for Ross students. On their way into the cafeteria, students made donations and pledges to give up something for the day, while learning more about the Food & Friends program.

Arthur Public School celebrated Live Free Day with smoothies made by parents involved in the school’s snack program. The school community helped raise more than $300, beating their goal of $250.
