UGDSB teacher receives Earth Steward Teacher Award

GUELPH, ON – On September 28, 2023, Upper Grand District School Board teacher, Cathy Dykstra was honoured by Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF) as one of the 2023 runners up of the Susan Langley’s Earth Steward Teacher Award.

LSF is a Canadian charity that has been helping integrate sustainability education into Canada’s school system for over 30 years. They work in partnership with Canadian educators, youth, governments, businesses and community members to empower students to change the world.

Each year the Susan Langley’s Earth Steward Teaching Award is presented to teachers for their contributions to sustainability in Canadian schools. According to the LSF website, “this year’s winners and runners up demonstrate exceptional leadership in sustainability education, are recognized as inspirations to their students and school community, and have taken on creative, innovative projects to advance sustainability learning and education.”

Dykstra has been a dedicated grade 5 teacher at Kortright Hills Public School for many years. She passionately teaches her students about the environment and future of our planet. According to LSF, Dykstra “empowers students to become engaged environmental citizens through her sustainability-focused teaching approach. Cathy’s commitment to her teaching is inspiring, as she orchestrates diverse learning opportunities, encourages student activism, and connects her students with community and global experts, nurturing the next generation of passionate environmental advocates.”
