GUELPH, Ontario — Doug Morrell, Superintendent of Education for the Upper Grand District School Board, has been awarded Honourary Life Membership in the Ontario Principals’ Council (OPC), the voluntary organization representing 5,000 Ontario principals and vice principals in public elementary and secondary schools. Doug served as the OPC’s President in 2009-10.

The award is for those who have provided exemplary service by advancing or upholding the purpose of the OPC.

Doug has been a teacher and principal for the past 25 years. He has been involved with the OPC for over 10 years at the local and provincial levels, advocating on behalf of school leaders across the province. In his role as Provincial President, Doug promoted initiatives to ensure safe schools, positive learning environments, opportunities to reach at-risk kids and ongoing professional learning for school leaders.

In September 2010, Doug was promoted to Superintendent of Education supporting the Upper Grand District’s eight elementary schools in Minto, Mapleton and Wellington North, and six secondary schools in Palmerston, Fergus, Mount Forest, Orangeville and Shelburne. His other portfolios include safe schools and equity and inclusive education.

“Doug is a special educator who shows his support and dedication for public education every day,” said Bob Borden, Chair of the board. “We are proud of his accomplishments both in our schools and through the contributions he made as the President of OPC.”

The OPC’s Outstanding Contribution to Education Award was presented to Craig and Marc Kielburger, founders of Free the Children, the world’s largest youth-driven charity that advocates on behalf of children’s issues in more than 45 countries world-wide.
