MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
November 21, 2012

GUELPH, Ontario – The Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) has reached tentative contract agreements with two more bargaining units, Office, Clerical and Technical staff (OCT) and Professional Student Services Personnel (PSSP). The workers are represented by District 18 of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF).

The agreements have been forwarded to the Minister of Education for review.

Staff covered under the tentative agreements have suspended bargaining sanctions that began on November 12. The OCT group includes administrative support staff, secondary and elementary office coordinators and Information Technology staff. The PSSP group includes Child and Youth Counsellors, Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists and Social Workers.

On November 17 Upper Grand and York Region were the first two school boards in Ontario to broker tentative agreements with secondary school teachers. Laurel Broten, Minister of Education, congratulated the Board and local OSSTF union for coming up with a workable agreement.

The UGDSB has also achieved a tentative agreement with the local OSSTF bargaining unit that represents Educational Assistants, Early Childhood Educators and Special Program Assistants.

It is expected that all four of the tentative agreements will be voted upon by trustees at the regular board meeting on November 27. The agreements must also be ratified by local union membership before they are forwarded to the Minister of Education for final approval.

The Board is continuing to negotiate with other local bargaining units. A meeting with OSSTF union officials representing secondary school occasional teachers is scheduled for the end of the month.

The Board also continues to meet with the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO), representing elementary teachers and occasional elementary teachers, and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) representing custodial and maintenance staff.
