GUELPH, Ontario – Three students from two Guelph schools received top honours at the 40th Annual Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair on April 9, 2013 in Kitchener. Another 25 students also won gold, silver, bronze and pewter medals.
John McCrae PS Grade 8 student Emma H. received an Award of Merit for her project, “Plants That Bug Superbugs”. Her project looked into natural and man-made antibiotics and how effective they were.
“What made her project very interesting is that she found a drug-resistant bacterium in one of her samples from the community,” said teacher Rhys Bennett. “She was able to look at antibiotics and how useful they were against this drug-resistant strain.”
Emma conducted her research in a university lab with the proper safety equipment.
Centennial CVI students Kelly D. and Max R. won an Award of Merit and the Google Young Research Award for their project “The Effects of Hypoxia on Embryonic Development”.
Kelly and Max were experimenting with fly embryos, attempting to use oxygen levels in combination with temperature to place the fly embryos into a state of “suspended animation” – stopping growth at a specific stage without any deterioration.
The John McCrae PS and CCVI projects were among seven entries to receive the Award of Merit. Winners are recognized as the top projects in the fair, regardless of category or division, and receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Lethbridge, Alberta from May 11 to 18.
The Google Young Researcher Award received by Kelly and Maximilian covers the cost of the winner and a chaperone for attending a professional conference appropriate to the student’s area of research.
Nearly 300 students from Waterloo Region and Wellington County took part in the science and engineering fair, coming from public, Catholic and private schools.
