GUELPH, Ontario — Upper Grand students in grade 7 to 12 who have struggled with hardships and overcome barriers will be honoured at the annual Celebration Day, Wednesday May 26 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Guelph’s River Run Centre.

Celebration Day is part of the board’s Student Success program. It recognizes at risk students and the school programs that engage them by providing opportunities for school participation in an environment that that suits their unique strengths and learning styles.

“Not all students are able to succeed in the regular classroom setting”, says Jeni Vaughn, the Upper Grand vice-principal who coordinates the event. “Our student success and alternative education programs do make a difference for those who struggle in the traditional education system.”

Achieving by Believing Awards will be presented to grade 7 and 8 students that have worked hard, and used supports schools have offered them so they can make progress in achieving academic success. Five Achieving by Believing scholarships will be presented to graduating secondary students who, because of their active participation in and commitment to alternative education programs, are ready to go on to work, training or post-secondary education.

“We truly appreciate the board’s leadership in support of student success”, Ms Vaughn comments. “This, along with volunteer work, and partnerships created by parents and teachers who send the important message – we believe in you – make Celebration Day possible”.

“Ultimately this day recognizes and commends our students who are brave and willing to walk through the door and ask for help.”

The public and media are invited to attend Celebration Day.
