We stand with the 2SLBGTQIA + community: A message from UGDSB’s Chair and Director

June 30, 2023

The Upper Grand District School Board values all students, employees, and families, regardless of age, ancestry, colour, race, citizenship, ethnic origin, place of origin, creed, ability, family status, marital status, gender identity, gender expression, socioeconomic status, employment, housing, sex, and sexual orientation, and is committed to creating and maintaining a learning and working environment where everyone can participate fully, thrive, and reach their full potential, free from trauma, bias, stereotyping, oppression and systemic racism.

We are saddened by the act of hate that unfolded at the University of Waterloo on Wednesday, June 28, 2023.  Our thoughts go to the victims of this Homophobic and Transphobic attack and to the entire 2SLGBTQIA+ community.  These events remind us that learning institutions everywhere need to be places that promote inclusivity and acceptance, and are safe spaces for all.

In solidarity with the University of Waterloo and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, the Upper Grand District School Board will fly the Progressive Pride Flag at the Guelph Board Office for an additional week, until the end of day on July 7th.

To the UGDSB students, staff and community members who identify with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, “You matter and You belong”.  At the Upper Grand District School Board, we remain committed to naming and addressing homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, forms of hate and systems of oppression.  The UGDSB supports 2SLGBTQIA+ staff, students and their families by celebrating the joy of identity and centering 2SLGBTQIA+ histories, contributions and excellence in our learning and work communities.

We must continue to work together to ensure our learning and working environments are safe for all. We cannot tolerate gender-based violence and all forms of hate.
