MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
February 23, 2010GUELPH, Ontario — Five penguins crafted by grade 5 students at Westwood Public School are off to the winter Olympics in Vancouver and making a big splash.

After studying penguins as part of the curriculum, and making stuffed penguins of their own, Pat Sproat’s students wanted to do their part to mark the Olympics in Canada. They decided to send a penguin to the Olympics with Grade 2 teacher Wendy Townsend, who was planning to attend the games.

The class actually made five penguins, packed them in special boxes and sent them to various people who were going west to be part of the Olympic experience.

Petey (Penguin #1) arrived the day before the Olympics opened and sent a long letter back to the school about what he was planning to do on his trip.

Paddy the Penguin headed out next and had her picture taken with Wayne Gretsky at the Vancouver airport as she departed the plane.

Peppe has yet to report on what he’s up to out there. Prina left with Mrs. Townsend and will be appearing in some of her pictures.

Pip, the fifth and final penguin. is patiently waiting for his turn as he’s going with a news broadcaster to the Paralympics.

Mrs. Spoat’s grade 5 class now has a special attachment now to the winter Olympics – Go Penguins Go!
