Your Opportunity to Name a School
MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release
January 8, 2014
GUELPH, Ontario — Want to have your say on what the Upper Grand District School Board should name its schools? Here’s your opportunity.
The board has four new schools opening in 2014 in Guelph, Rockwood and Orangeville. The board is also considering renaming the rebuilt King George Public School in Guelph. Public input is welcome until the deadline of January 17, 2014.
You can enter your submission online at www.ugdsb.ca/name, or fill in a naming form and drop it in a box at one of the schools listed below.
The board’s policy for naming or re-naming schools is based on three criteria: the street on which the school is located, a reflection of the community the school serves, or after a significant individual or event. Submissions not based on these criteria unfortunately can’t be considered.
Everyone is welcome to participate – members of the pubic, students, teachers and parents. We need names for:
- The new school on Spencer Avenue in Orangeville’s Settlers Creek subdivision (JK-grade 8 regular track). Naming boxes at Montgomery Village PS, East Garafraxa PS and Princess Elizabeth PS.
- The new school on MacLellan Street in Rockwood where the program is under review until a board decision in January 2014. Naming boxes at Rockwood Centennial PS and Brisbane PS.
- The new school on Lee Street in East Guelph (JK-grade 8 regular track). Naming box at King George PS.
- The new school Zaduk Place in South Guelph (JK-grade 8 French Immersion Centre. Naming boxes at F.A. Hamilton PS and John McCrae PS.
- The recently rebuilt school on Lemon Street in Guelph, historically known as King George PS (JK-grade 8 FI Centre). Naming boxes at King George PS and Victory PS.
If you enter online you’ll be asked which school you wish to suggest a name for, the rationale behind your thinking, and your name and email address. The email address is optional. You can provide names for more than one school.
The principals appointed to new schools, members of the school council/parent communities along with the Superintendents for the new schools and local trustees will serve on the naming committees. The principals will also talk to incoming students.
