GUELPH, Ontario – The September meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on September 25, 2018. The following provides highlights from the meeting.
2018 Community Planning and Facility Partnership Report
Each year, the Planning Department prepares a Facility Partnership Report, which provides information on potential facility sharing opportunities within the community.
Through facility partnerships, the UGDSB works with community partners to share facilities to the benefit of the Board, students and the community, and to optimize the use of public assets owned by the Board. Direction for working with community partners is outlined in UGDSB Policy 319 Community Planning and Facility Partnership.
The 2018 report indicates that there are currently no partnership opportunity or suitable surplus spaces available at this time in existing UGDSB facilities. However, staff were directed to consult the board’s Partnership List regarding interest in co-build opportunities at possible future schools in the district.
Annual Partnership Meeting
Staff also announced the date for the Annual Partnership Meeting. In accordance with Ministry guideline and Board policy, the Board is required to host a partnership meeting to advise prospective partners about space available in schools or co-build opportunities. This year’s meeting will be held on Oct. 24 starting at 1:30 p.m. at the Wellington County Museum and Archives in Aboyne.
Active and Safe Routes to School
The Upper Grand District School Board is a partner in the Wellington Dufferin Guelph Active and Safe Routes to School (ASRTS) Committee. Committee partners also include the Wellington Catholic DSB, STWDSTS, Public Health and the City of Guelph. The vision of the committee is that walking, cycling and other active modes will be attractive, realistic and safe modes of transportation for school students in Wellington, Dufferin and Guelph. At the September Board Meeting, committee Co-Chairs Alexandra Fournier and Benita van Miltenburg provided updates on the committee’s upcoming initiatives.
Trustees were encouraged to participate in Walk to and at School Day on Wednesday October 3. Walk to School Day is an international event that encourages students to be active on their journey between home and school. On Oct. 3, ASRTS is encouraging parents and guardians to walk, bike or wheel to school with their children. The ASRTS committee is encouraging schools with bused students to participate by organizing a walk around the schoolyard at lunch or before bell time.
Architect Selection Committee
Paul Scinocca, Operations Officer, outlined the format required to select a pool of architects for upcoming building projects. UGDSB Policy 308 requires that a pool of qualified architectural firms be maintained, from which appointments are made to design new facilities and undertake additions and major renovations to existing facilities as required. Policy 308 limits the term of the architectural pool to four years. Three trustees with experience in the system are required to serve on the Architect Selection Committee, which will bring a final report to the Board in November. Trustees Fairbairn, Lustgarten-Evoy and Schieck were selected.
