Board Meeting Highlights for October 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – The October meeting of the Upper Grand District School Board was held on October 25, 2016. The following provides highlights from the meeting.

Registration and selection process for JK French Immersion

Trustees received a report that outlines the details of a new Junior Kindergarten (JK) French Immersion (FI) registration process for the UGDSB to be utilized beginning in the 2017-18 school year, and a selection process required to implement the differentially applied school level JK FI enrolment caps.

Highlights of the report include:

The window for RT and FI registration will begin on Jan. 9 2017. The window for ‘on-time’ JK FI registration will close on Jan. 26, 2017 at 4 p.m. All RT and FI schools and both Board Offices will be provided with copies of the 2017-18 Student Admission Form. The form will also be available online.

North Dufferin French Immersion Feasibility Study

During the public consultations on last year’s French Review, parents and guardians expressed an interested in establishing French Immersion (FI) in Shelburne. As a result, board staff was directed by trustees to investigate the feasibility of FI in Shelburne as part of the boundary review to ease the population growth at Princess Elizabeth PS and Mono Amaranth PS.

At the October board meeting, trustees approved the start of FI in a North Dufferin school, effective September 2017. The FI school location, attendance area boundary and implementation of boundary changes will be confirmed through the completion of the on-going North Dufferin Boundary Review process. Trustees also approved a staff recommendation that the new North Dufferin FI program will have an enrolment cap of 26 JK FI students for the 2017-18 school year. This cap will be reviewed annually together with the differentially applied school level JK FI enrolment caps approved in May 2016.

Student trustees provide updates on secondary schools

The UGDSB’s new student trustees gave their first presentation of the year to the board. Julia, a student from Erin District High School, provided an update on trends in the rural schools. Hajra, a student from Guelph CVI, provided the urban schools update. The student trustees also outlined their goals for the school year, including improving representation on Student Senate from all schools, creating an environment at Student Senate were schools can share ideas, and finding new ways to inform students of various post-secondary pathways.

The next regular monthly meeting will be held by on Tues. Nov. 22, 2016, at the Guelph Board Office, 500 Victoria Road North. Everyone is welcome to attend. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
