CCVI students win first-annual GryphBiz Case Competition

March 8, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – Several groups of Upper Grand DSB secondary students visited the University of Guelph on March 2, to participate in the first annual GryphBiz Case Competition.

The GryphBiz Case Competition brought together teams of students from four Guelph secondary schools. Each team was given a case study describing a real-world situation and how it relates to a business organization. Students were tasked with working through the decisions that the business should make and what results would provide the greatest success to the organization.

Approximately 50 students in varying grades from Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute, John F. Ross Collegiate Vocational Institute, Centennial Collegiate Vocational Institute and the WCDSB’s Bishop Macdonell High School competed on teams of 4 to 5 students, with 11 teams participating.

Students were given a business case involving Boston Pizza. Students were tasked with preparing a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats), as well as preparing promotional strategies and recommendations for Boston Pizza. One team from each school advanced to the finals, where students presented their solutions to a panel of judges consisting of University of Guelph business professors, undergraduate students and staff.

In preparation of the competition, students were given a practice case, and then one week prior to the event, they were given the real case. Students had to prepare ten slides for a 10-minute presentation and prepare for a 5-minute question and answer period.

Prizes were awarded to the top four teams. Winning the top prize was a group of Grade 10 students from Centennial CVI. Aro, Byron, Muttaqi, Cameron and Adam walked away from the competition with $500.

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the GryphBiz Case Competition.
