April 4, 2017

SHELBURNE, Ontario – On March 29, Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students and the Business Entrepreneurship class from Centre Dufferin DHS learned about entrepreneurship at the Shelburne Legion.

SHSM is a specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while still meeting the requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The SHSM program helps students in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.

Participating students got involved in their local community through the Innovative, Creative, Entrepreneurship Training, which is funded through SHSM. Five business owners that are actively involved with the Business Improvement Area (BIA) of Shelburne came to the Legion to challenge the students to brainstorms ways to draw more shoppers into the downtown core.

Students spent time observing the downtown area and interviewing potential shoppers and business owners to get a better understanding of the problem facing storeowners in Shelburne.

When students returned to the Legion, they were guided through several brainstorming strategies to help them start thinking of solutions that were innovative and creative. At the end of the day, students presented their proposed solutions to the local BIA members.

The day allowed students to become engaged in a real-world learning. Students left the day feeling like their opinions mattered and knew that their solutions would help shape the community they live in.
