Celebrate the Day of Pink with the Upper Grand DSB

April 12, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – April 12 is the International Day of Pink, a day where communities across the world unite to celebrate diversity and raise awareness to stop homophobia, transphobia, transmisogyny, discrimination and all forms of bullying.

On April 12, students and staff across the Upper Grand District School Board took a stand against bullying and participated in numerous activities that promote inclusion.

At James McQueen Public School, students wore pink and created anti-bullying posters.

Students from John McCrae Public School’s Rainbow Club went into K-3 classrooms to read pictures books to the younger students. Earlier in the week, students in grades 6 to 8 participated in a LGBTQ workshop with singer-songwriter Kate Reid and members of the Rainbow Club presented workshops on diversity and gender expression to students in grades 4 and 5.

Many other schools encouraged staff and students to wear pink, create anti-bullying posters and discussed the importance of inclusion and celebrated diversity.

The Day of Pink started in Nova Scotia when two high school students saw a gay student being bullied for wearing a pink shirt. The students intervened, but still wanted to do more to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying. They organized a day where all students wore pink in the school to stand together and show their solidarity.

The message of the day is clear, “anyone can bully, any can be victimized by bullying, but together we can stop it.”

On Wednesday, school and board staff shared photos on Twitter of how they are standing together to prevent bullying using the hashtag #dayofpink.
