GUELPH, Ontario – They designed, programmed, they measured and measured again. Tested, tested once more and vied for a shot at provincials.
Grade 4 to 8 students from across the Upper Grand District School Board put their skills to the test at the UGDSB’s Regional Skills Competition on Friday.
The event has grown to be one of the largest of its kind in the province and was held in multiple venues at College Heights Secondary School, Centennial CVI and the Centennial Arena.
Students arrived on Friday morning, decked out in their school colours, and received their challenge. Working in teams, they planned, designed, built and tested within a set time limit in challenges including Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Character Animation, TV/Video Production, Technology, Health and Safety, Green Energy, and Construction.
The winning teams go on to the Skills Ontario provincial finals in Toronto this May.
These challenges allow students to apply their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and math in a really meaningful and engaging way. They get to create and innovate, problem solve and participate in a little friendly competition between schools. The event is also part of the board’s continued drive to promote tech and the skilled trades as first-choice career options to Upper Grand students.
