Guelph Police accepting student applications for Youth Engagement Program

April 3, 2017

GUELPH, Ontario – Have you ever wanted to get an inside look at what it’s like to work in policing?

Applications are now being accepted for the Guelph Police’s Youth Engagement Program (YEP) Fall 2017 session.

YEP is a free, interactive program for students in grades 10 to 12+. YEP participants will meet every Tuesday evening between Sept. 19 and Dec. 5, 2017, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Clair Road Emergency Services Centre in Guelph.

The highly interactive program gives students the opportunity to see their community through the eyes of police, teaches them about crime trends, while building relationships between youth and police.

Students work with police officers and community partners to discuss ways for youth to address crime issues that impact their generation. Students also learn more about the police’s Traffic Unit, Forensic Unit, Technological Crime Unit, Intelligence and Drug Unit, and K9 and Tactical Response Unit.

In groups, student will choose a topic that affects youth in their school and will discuss strategies for how they can make a difference in their community.

Participation in the program earns students 20 hours of community service, which counts toward the 40-hour secondary school requirement.

The deadline to apply to YEP is July 1. To apply online, visit the Guelph Police website

For more information on the program, contact Sgt. Ross Keller with the Guelph Police at 519-824-1212 ext. 7443 or [email protected].
