Guelph program aims to help students with Autism Spectrum Disorder transition to high school

January 22, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario — A new pilot program aims to help grade 8 students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) transition to high school smoothly.

Kerry’s Place Autism Services is holding weekly workshops in Guelph from now until early June.

Kerry’s Place works to enhance the quality of life of people with ASD, through supports and knowledge sharing. Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the way individuals interact and communicate with those around them. The organization serves more than 8,000 people with ASD and their families each year.

The pilot program, funded by RBC Royal Bank, will help students prepare for grade 9. Some of the topics that will be discussed include bullying, cyber safety, healthy relationships, friendship and more.

Workshops began this week, but because programming is non-cumulative, new students can still register. Registration will stay open until the workshop groups are full.

Currently, Kerry’s Place is only funded to run this as a one-time program, but organizers hope that if funding became available the program could run again, potentially in regions outside of Guelph as well.
