Guelph teacher travels to Kuwait to train teachers, staff and parents

March 22, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – A teacher from Guelph spent March Break training other teachers, staff and parents in Kuwait.

Connie Bender, a kindergarten teacher at William C. Winegard Public School, was one of eight Tribes trainers from Ontario who spent seven days in Kuwait, training more than 250 teachers at the Al-Bayan Bilingual School.

The Tribes training course was 24 hours long. Then for an additional two days the trainers provided two-hour workshops for parents and the school’s support staff, including nurses, custodians and administrative assistants. The trainers also visited classrooms and teachers while school was in session.

“It was an amazing experience and a reminder that no matter where you live, teachers around the world have the same concerns and desire to find the best ways possible to support their students,” said Bender.

Thousands of schools in Canada and abroad have become Tribes Learning Communities, where students learn in positive and caring learning environments.

Tribes classrooms use a process of teaching that encourages students to develop social skills and build a sense of community within classes and the school. Students are respected for their different abilities, cultures, gender and interests, and are actively involved in their own learning.

The Tribes process honours four agreements: mutual respect, attentive listening, appreciation/no put downs, and the right to say no to peers. Students learn a collaborative set of skills so they can work well together as a group, helping each other with tasks, problem solving, monitoring progress and celebrating achievements.
