March 14, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – Teams from the Upper Grand District School Board competed earlier this month in the Elementary Cardboard Boat Races – showcasing design skills and creativity in a variety of challenges.

In regional competition, Aberfoyle Public School’s Team A placed first, Erin Public School’s Team 2 placed second, and Aberfoyle’s Team B placed third. These top three teams were invited to Skills Ontario’s provincial championships held in Waterloo on March 1.

Skills Ontario has been hosting Cardboard Boat Races across the province for more than 20 years

The races test students’ design ability, creativity and problem-solving skills. The goal is to build a floating structure that will outperform all others in speed and weight challenges.

Teams of four have two hours to build a boat, creating a seaworthy vessel out of two sheets of 4’ by 8’ cardboard and duct tape.

In the speed challenges, teams can race with one or two paddlers in the boat. Once the whistle blows, students paddle like crazy to travel the length of the pool as fast as possible.

In the weight challenges, team members get into the boat one by one, seeing how much weight the boat can take on before sinking.

In the Elementary Championships, Aberfoyle’s Team B placed second overall in the province, the team from Erin PS placed fifth overall, and Aberfoyle’s Team A placed 18th.

Congratulations to all the teams and students involved!
