UGDSB students compete at provincial Cardboard Boat Races

GUELPH, Ontario – Students in the Upper Grand DSB achieved an incredible feat at the regional competition for Skills Ontario Cardboard Boat Races, which advanced them to the provincial competition on March 2.

On February 3, regional races were held at the Centennial CVI pool. More than 100 grade 7 to 8 students came together to form 36 teams. Teams were from the Upper Grand District School Board and surrounding school boards.

UGDSB students worked hard at regionals and went on to compete at the provincial competition.

At the provincial competition, Aberfoyle Public School Team 1 ranked fourth. They completed the race in 21 seconds and had a maximum weight of 713 lbs. Ranking in sixth place was Aberfoyle Public School Team 2. They completed the race in 20.31 seconds and had a maximum weight of 498 lbs. Finishing in 21st place, was Erin Public School’s team. They completed the race in 32.06 seconds and had a maximum weight of 401 lbs.

Aberfoyle PS Team 1 set a record for most weight held. They held their weight for 60 seconds and achieved the 10th heaviest weight recorded by an elementary school team since Skills Ontario began the cardboard boat competitions in 1997.

Winning a speed record at the regional competitions held earlier this year was Arthur Public School. They achieved the 10th fastest speed recorded by an elementary school team, having completed the race in 16.72 seconds.
