Two students from the Upper Grand District School Board have been recognized by the Guelph YMCA-YWCA for their accomplishments.

Katie K. from Centennial Collegiate and Vocational School, and Sarah J. from College Heights Secondary School, were nominated for the Y’s 20th Annual Women of Distinction Awards in the Young Women (16-19) category. Katie was the winner of the award, which was presented in a gala at the River Run Centre on May 7, 2015.

Katie has been trying to make the world a better place from an early age, according to nominee biographies on the Guelph YMCA-YWCA website. She has fundraised for the Masai Centre and the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and most recently was the vision by Wanderlust 2015, raising $15,000 for the maternal / fetal care unit at Mount Sinai Hospital. She hopes for an executive career where she can help “shatter the glass ceiling”, and looks to women currently in positions of leadership as her role models.

Sarah is a strong advocate in raising awareness around youth mental health. She is a founding member of GLOWW (Giving Light Offers Worth and Wellness), and has shared her story of hope and recovery at conferences, events, workshops and schools. After high school, Sarah plans to focus on postsecondary education in the field of mental health and human services. She has inspired women of all ages with the reminder that they are not alone is battling mental illness, the importance of self-care and how to access mental health support.
