Upper Grand students compete in largest Elementary Skills Competition in Ontario

For Immediate Release
March 16, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – What began nearly a decade ago with a handful of schools, has grown to the largest competition of its kind in the province.

On April 8, 2016, more than 1,000 Upper Grand District School Board students in grades 4 to 8 will participate in the regional Elementary Skills Competition.

“The competition has become so popular that we have to limit each school to bringing only one team per event,” said Chad Reay, Elementary Curriculum Leader at the UGDSB. “If we had space this event could be three times the size,” he said.

When the regional competition first began in the district, just three local schools competed. This year, 268 teams will participate in events that include Lego Robotics, Construction, Character Animation, TV/Video, and Health and Safety.

Reay attributes the success of the competition to a strong partnership with the Board’s Specialist High Skills Major lead, a committed group of teachers, and “obviously our extremely innovative students.”

The events will be held in three venues in Guelph: College Heights Secondary School, Centennial CVI and the Centennial Arena. Competition runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Winning teams at the regional competition will head to the Skills Ontario finals on May 2, 2016.
