Upper Grand students win big at regional science fair
Students from several schools in the Upper Grand District School Board were medal winners at 2015 Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair held at Bingemans in Kitchener on Tuesday, April 7, 2015. Awards of Merit, given to the top projects in the Fair regardless of category or division, were awarded to Devanshi S., grade 11 at Centennial CVI for “Evaluating Anti-Microbial Plant-Derived Compounds” and to Ashna J., at student at John Galt PS for “The Third Wheel”.
Devanshi was also took home the gold medal in Senior Biotechnology. She was the winner of the REAL Summer Scholarship (a summer research experience at Laurier University valued at $2800), along with Best in Division and a Best Written Report Award.
Ashna was awarded a gold medal in Junior Engineering, plus the Engineering Science Quest Award with a $300 scholarship to a summer science camp.
As Award of Merit winners, Devanshi and Ashna has earned places at the Canada-Wide Science Fair May 14-16, 2015 in Fredericton, all expenses paid.
Other winners from Upper Grand were:
- Rachael Y., gold medal in Junior Physical and Mathematical Science for “In the Drink”
- Janat I., a grade 12 student at Centennial CVI, won the silver medal in Senior Physical Science for “Detecting Lead Ions (II) in Water and Dye Samples”. She also received the Sir Isaac Newton Award for best physics content in a project.
- Sequoia K., John Galt PS, won a bronze medal in Junior Earth & Environmental Science, plus a Best Written Report Award (Junior), for “Pass The Salt: Salt Concentrations In The Speed River”.
- Emily S., John McCrae PS, won a silver medal in Junior Life Science for “Font-astic”.
- William D., John McCrae PS, won a silver medal in Junior Life Science for “How Are Screens Affecting Your Children’s Brains?”
- Stephanie S., John McCrae PS, won a silver medal in Junior Physical and Mathematical Science for “Food=Fire=Electricity”.
- Evan C., John McCrae PS, won a bronze medal in Junior Physical & Mathematical Science for “Where Art Thou”.
- Amber P. and Kaylyn P., Taylor Evans PS, won a bronze medal in Junior Physical & Mathematical Science for “The Power of Yeast”.
- Emma P. and Pavleen S., John McCrae PS, won bronze medals in Junior Physical & Mathematical Science for “Quest for Fire”.
- Emily Z. and Melanie A., Taylor Evans PS, won pewter medals in Junior Life Science for “Do Fonts Affect Your Memory”.
The Waterloo-Wellington Science and Engineering Fair is an annual event that brings together the best of the young scientific minds of the region. Each year the fair hosts approximately 220 projects involving over 300 students from public, separate and independent schools in Waterloo Region and Wellington County. The projects and students are judged according to a national standard that includes the scientific method, creativity, organization, research, background knowledge, visual impact and a written summary of the project.
