Boundary proposed for new elementary school in East Guelph

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release
April 10, 2015

GUELPH, Ontario – The second staff report in the New East Guelph (Couling Crescent) School Boundary Review has put forward just one scenario for the attendance area of a new JK-8 French Immersion (FI) Centre.

The proposed boundary follows, clockwise, Victoria Road, Eramosa Road, Guelph Lake, Jones Baseline and Stone Road. It includes an already established interim boundary for JK-3 students from Edward Johnson PS who will be holding at the former Tytler Public School starting this September.

A business case was approved by the Ministry of Education in February 2014 to address continuing enrolment pressures at Edward Johnson PS and École King George PS. Currently the proposed school is moving through the site plan approval process for a four acre property at the corner of Couling Crescent and Watson Parkway North. The board anticipates the 495 pupil place school will be ready for occupancy no later than September 2017.

If the new school opens in September 2017, it would be with JK-5 students from the holding area, joined by JK-5 students reassigned from École King George PS. The school would grow to JK-8 by 2020, but the report considers a possible delay in the implementation of Grades 7 and 8 if there are insufficient students for a viable intermediate division.

Parents and guardians are invited to learn more at a public information session on Wednesday, April 22 from 7 to 9 p.m. at École King George PS, 72 Lemon Street, Guelph.

Report #2 is available for download at www.ugdsb.ca/egbr. Visitors to the web page can also sign up to receive alerts whenever significant new content is added, and submit feedback through an online form.

The review’s third and final report will go to the Business Operations Committee on June 9. A final decision is expected to be made by trustees at the last regular board meeting of the school year on June 23.
