Boundary review will finalize attendance area for new elementary school in East Guelph

MEDIA RELEASE
March 11, 2015

GUELPH, Ontario – The initiation of a boundary review to establish the full JK-8 French Immersion (FI) boundary of a new school on Couling Crescent in East Guelph was approved by trustees at the Business Operations Committee on March 10, 2015. The vote must be ratified at the regular meeting of the board on March 31.

It is anticipated that the new school will open by September 2017. The 495 pupil place building, a modified repeat design of École Arbour Vista PS, will relieve enrolment pressure in the FI program at Edward Johnson PS and École King George PS.

Part of the boundary has already been established, as trustees voted in February to expedite the process in response to urgent accommodation needs at Edward Johnson PS. Incoming cohorts of about 100 kindergarten students a year are overwhelming the capacity of the JK-6 FI Centre, which already has six portables and a four-room portapak.

JK to Grade 3 FI students living in the interim attendance area will move from Edward Johnson PS to temporary accommodations at the former Tytler PS this September. If the Couling Crescent school is not ready for occupancy in 2016-2017 the school community holding at Tytler PS will grow to JK-4 FI.

With the portion of the new school’s boundary coming from Edward Johnson PS already decided, the “New East Guelph (Couling Crescent) School Boundary Review” will focus solely on the extent to which École King George PS’s current JK-8 FI boundary will be reassigned to Couling Crescent.

The current status quo projection for École King George PS indicates the school will be about 50 students over its 481 pupil place capacity by 2017, with growth continuing in future years. The space available for portables at École King George PS is limited.

Next steps are for scenarios to be developed by a committee comprised of board staff, including the principals of Edward Johnson PS and École King George PS. A shortlist of scenarios will be presented in Report #2 to trustees at the Business Operations Committee meeting on April 14, 2015, and at a Public Information Session on April 22, 2015 from 7 to 9 p.m. at École King George PS.

A third and final report will be presented to trustees in June 2015.
