October 2, 2017

BRISBANE, Ontario – On September 28, Brisbane Public School hosted a tree planting ceremony. The school’s Playground Committee was one of the successful applicants of a grant from Tree Canada. The school received a grant of $5,000 as a celebration of Canada 150, funded by the Government of Canada.

Tree Canada is an organization that has been in the pursuit of making life greener for Canadians for over 25 years. Tree Canada has planted over 80 million trees in over 600 schoolyards across Canada.

Tree Canada prides itself on planting large trees that will “provide shade, shelter and will foster learning about Indigenous culture and the protection of our natural landscape.”

The ceremony at the school was held in conjunction with the annual Meet the Teacher BBQ. Those in attendance included Erin Mayor Allan Alls and other members of Erin Town Council, Bill Morrison, former Senator of the Credit Métis Council, School Trustee Kathryn Cooper, Director of Education, Martha Rogers, Superintendent of Education Denise Heaslip and other members of the Upper Grand District School Board.

Along with the Mayor, Morrison spoke to the group about the history of Canadian Indigenous People and the connections to respecting and protecting the environment.

Brisbane PS looks forward to providing shade and comfort to students for generations to come.
