College Heights SS students take skills learned in the classroom into summer employment
July 3, 2018
GUELPH, Ontario – Two Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) welding students from College Heights Secondary School have a unique opportunity to gain skills and employment in the field this summer.
SHSM is a specialized program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while still meeting the requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The SHSM program helps students in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.
Guelph-based AWC Manufacturing took co-op students for this first time this school year. After the co-op term, they hired two students for summer employment. Brayden L. and Drayden M. are both students at College Heights SS and were both hired after passing a weld test.
Brayden and Drayden will begin the summer by shadowing an experienced welder for three weeks, and then begin working on projects such as welding dump truck bodies.
College Heights SS welding teacher Aaron Meyer is pleased that students were able to take the skills learned in class and find jobs right away.
