Creating Global Citizens: UGDSB staff attend Literacy Symposium

GUELPH, Ontario – Upper Grand District School Board elementary and secondary literacy leads and administrators attended the 2016 Literacy Symposium on November 24. The theme of 2016’s event was Creating Global Citizens.

Staff explored how literacy intersects with global competencies and dug deep into critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, communications and creativity as it relates to global citizenship and literacy. 

The day involved workshop sessions for staff and keynote addresses. Keynote speakers at the event included Brenda Sherry, Peter Skillen and Jael Richardson.

Former UGDSB teacher, Instructional Coach and Vice-Principal, Brenda Sherry, is currently working with the Ontario Ministry of Education. Serving in the 21st Century Learning Unit with the Ministry of Education, Brenda shared her passion about Global Citizenship and literacy with staff.

Along with Brenda, Peter Skillen addressed staff about the importance of Global Citizenship. Peter worked as an elementary teacher and Instructional Leader with the Toronto District School Board for 30 years. Furthermore, Peter was the co-founder of the Minds on Media model of professional learning.

Finishing off the keynote addresses was Jael Richardson, author of The Stone Thrower: A Daughter’s Lesson, a Father’s Life. This memoir, which is based on her relationship with her father, received a CBC Bookie Award. Jael currently serves as the Artistic Director for the Festival of Literary Diversity.

UGDSB staff were captivated by all speakers and eager to participate in the workshops.
