CWDHS students place in top 10 at national cybersecurity competition

May 25, 2021

FERGUS, Ontario – Students at Centre Wellington District High School recently competed in the CyberTitan National Student Cybersecurity competition.

According to the CyberTitan website, this competition is “one of Canada’s largest cyber defence competitions. This competition places teams of high school and middle school students in Canadian real-world situations.” During this competition, teams are given cybersecurity challenges that they must overcome.

Two teams from CWDHS placed in the top 10 this year during the virtual competition. According to CWDHS teacher Tim King, the FalconTech Plagueware team aggressively removed the malware on the infected competition network in the final minutes of the competition. Because of this strategy, the team won the Defender Award along with placing fourth in the competition.

CyberTitan architect Ian Thornton-Trump described the FalconTech Plagueware team as, “an amazing group that made a really tough call to ‘nuke the machines from orbit’ to get rid of the malware in the last 10 minutes of the game.”

Although many of the teams struggled with this competition, the all-female team at CWDHS, the FalconTech Terabytches 3.0, toughed it out right to the end and placed in the top 10 nationally.

The final results of the competition were:

  1. Teapot (North York, ON)
  2. Premature Optimization (North York, ON)
  3. 6ixside (North York, ON)
  4. FalconTech Plagueware (Fergus, ON)
  5. Olympians Artemis (Edmonton, AB)
  6. CyberDragons (Fredericton, NB)
  7. DDR1 (Winnipeg, MB)
  8. Olympians Ares (Edmonton, AB)
  9. Inspect The Element (Winnipeg, MB)
  10. FalconTech Terabytches3.0 (Fergus, ON)

Congratulations to both teams from CWDHS.
