GUELPH, Ontario – It’s the largest Elementary Skills competition in the province with 54 schools from across the Upper Grand District participating, an increase of 22 schools over last year.

“The Elementary Skills Competition is growing at an amazing pace,” said Chad Reay, Elementary Curriculum Leader.

“This year due to the popularity of the program the venues have been expanded to include Centennial CVI. We used Centennial Arena and College Heights Secondary School last year, but we had to add the extra high school this year to increase space.”

There are 1,004 students in grades 4 to 8 set to participate in events that include Lego Robotics, Lego Mechanics, Construction, Technology, TV/Video, Character Animation, Green Technology and Health and Safety. This represents a total of 259 teams. Last year there were 161 school teams and 640 students in total.

“The competition places an emphasis on the value, and fun, of technology,” Reay said, “which is supported by Skills Canada Ontario and our own elementary Take Tech initiative.”

“We also have a strong partnership with our Specialist High Skills Major and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Programs that lets us promote hands-on learning opportunities.”

The competition runs from 10:00 a.m. starting with the builds and competitions taking place at 1:15 p.m. The winners go on to the Skills Ontario Finals May 4-6, 2015 at Waterloo’s RIM Park.
