Exploring pathways: Hundreds of CWDHS students participate in career conference

November 2, 2016

FERGUS, Ontario – Hundreds of students are spending the day learning about what their future could hold.

On Wednesday, Centre Wellington District High School held its fourth annual career conference for students in grades 10 to 12.

Many students prepared for the event by meeting with guidance counsellors and teachers to discuss possible career pathways. They will continue those conversations after the career conference concludes.

The conference gives youth an opportunity to learn more about possible jobs and pathways they may want to explore after high school. Students attended two sessions each of their choice and at lunchtime had the opportunity to visit the postsecondary school fair, where representatives from Ontario’s colleges and universities were ready to answer questions and talk about campus life.

The sessions were diverse, featuring a wide variety of professionals, from a geneticist and athletic therapist, to fire fighters, police and Crime Stoppers.

One part of the conference this year was the Food Farming & The Environment workshop, held at CWDHS’s Food School. Students learned about the art of butchering, beekeeping and the environment, tools and equipment of the culinary world, backyard chickens, and sustainable forestry practices.

School staff’s hope for the conference is that students would have a chance to starting thinking about what they want to become and how they’re going to get there. Students would have opportunities to talk to professionals working in those fields and get a better understanding of the commitment required to obtain their desired career.
