First step taken to establish a boundary for the new King George P.S.

MEDIA RELEASE

For Immediate Release

NOTE: The date of the public information session has been changed to Tuesday, October 23, 2013 due to a conflict with another board event. This media release has been modified to reflect the change.

GUELPH, Ontario — It won’t take effect until September 2014, but the Upper Grand District School Board is getting its homework done early by establishing an attendance area boundary for King George Public School. The school building at 72 Lemon Street in Guelph was demolished this year, and is being reconstructed for a September 2012 opening.

The first report of the King George PS JK-8 FI Boundary Review was presented to trustees at the Business Operations Committee meeting held in Shelburne on June 12. Trustees must still vote to proceed with the review at the June 26 board meeting.

The goals of the review will be to:

The long-term plan is to make King George a JK-8 French Immersion centre, but there will be a delay before it assumes that role. For the next two school years King George will be a “holding school” for regular track students awaiting the construction of new schools on Laurine Avenue (opening September 2013) and Lee Street (opening September 2014).

In September 2012 King George will also become the new school for JK to Grade 5 French Immersion students who were moved to the school as a result of the Edward Johnson JK-6 Boundary Review. Those students will complete their elementary years at King George.

In September 2014 King George, which has a capacity of 504 students, is projected to have an enrolment of 280 French Immersion students from the attendance area that formerly belonged to Edward Johnson. That will leave up to 224 spaces for the relief of John McCrae and Victory schools, where year-over-year growth in French Immersion and the arrival of Full Day Kindergarten (FDK) in 2014 is expected to create significant issues of overcrowding.

The October 2014 enrolment for the dual track Victory is projected to be 365 students, nearly 100 over the current number of students. Originally built in 1919, the school has very limited space to accommodate more students using portables.

John McCrae PS, which is a French Immersion centre, could be 150-200 students over capacity by 2014. The school has been “holding” Grade 7 and 8 students from north Guelph, an interim measure came out of the Centre Guelph FI Accommodation Review (2010). The relocation of those students should resolve the issue, freeing up space for FDK.

The King George PS JK-8 FI Boundary Review Committee, made up of board staff, will be looking at various boundary scenarios. The committee’s next report to the Business Operation’s committee on October 16 will include recommended attendance areas for King George – maps for JK-6 and 7/8 – along with one or more alternatives that were considered.

A public information meeting is tentatively scheduled for October 23. At the meeting parents will have the opportunity to look at the recommended and alternative scenarios, ask questions of Board planning staff, and provide their own input.

It is expected that the boundary review process will be completed by December 18.
