Four Shelburne students receive provincial heritage award

SHELBURNE, Ontario — For their creation of a World War I memorial based on a scroll designed by Group of Seven artist A.J. Casson, four Grade 12 students from Centre Dufferin District High School have received the Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Award for Youth Achievement.

The award was presented February 25, 2012 at Queenís Park under the Ontario Heritage Trust’s Young Heritage Leaders program.

The Town of Shelburne nominated the team of students, who worked on the memorial project for two years in collaboration with the Dufferin Museum and Archives and the community. A rededication ceremony at CDDHS was attended by over 800 veterans, students and guests.

The 2011 Lieutenant Governor’s Ontario Heritage Awards recognize outstanding contributions to the identification, preservation, protection and promotion of Ontario’s heritage. There are 15 lifetime achievement awards, two youth achievement awards (one individual and one group), four community leadership awards, and for 2011 a Black Heritage and Culture Award in in celebration of the International Year for People of African Descent.
