Glenbrook ES raises money for Headwaters Health through annual Glenbrook Gives assembly

May 28, 2019

SHELBURNE, Ontario – On May 27, students and staff at Glenbrook Elementary School showed their school spirit by shaving, cutting or dying their hair for a great cause in their community.

Glenbrook Gives started six years ago when Viola, then a student in grade 1, told her teacher Mrs. O’Connor that she wanted to donate her hair to kids who have lost their hair during cancer treatment.

Mrs. O’Connor, along with school staff Tami Bye and Heather Mavins, helped Viola coordinate a hair donation event for all staff and students called Glenbrook Gives and therefore an annual tradition was born at Glenbrook ES.

Over the past five years, Glenbrook Gives has given Pantene’s ‘Beautiful Lengths’ program more than 40 hair donations. This year, the school donated nine ponytails to Locks of Love, which provides real hair wigs to financially disadvantaged children who have lost their hair during cancer treatment, or those who have alopecia.

Additionally, last year because of their generosity, Glenbrook Gives received an honorary plaque from Headwaters Health Care Foundation for having raised more than $10,000 for the development and maintenance of Headwaters Hospital’s new chemotherapy suite.

At this year’s event, staff and students pledged to donate 10 inches of hair to Locks of Love, by either cutting their hair or shaving their head. Students could also raise money by pledging to colour their hair.

At this year’s event, Viola spoke to the students about how and why the Glenbrook Gives event began. Headwaters Health Care Foundation representatives Jenn Davies and Lynn Armstrong showed the students pictures of the chemotherapy suite and what the funds raised have provided for patients.

This event saw more than 65 students and staff colour their hair, nine shave their heads and nine donate 10 inches of hair. This event also raised more than $4,800 for Headwaters Health Care Foundation.

Students and staff at the school would like to thank Drew Clark from Lemon and Ginger Hair Salon for making all of the hair donors look amazing after the big cut.

Great job Glenbrook!
