December 2, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – As part of the Upper Grand District School Board’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) Program, grade 11 students at John F. Ross CVI participated in a 10 week makeup artist course.

The SHSM program is a specialized program that allows students to focus their leaning on a specific economic sector while still meeting the requirement of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. The SHSM program helps assist students in their transition from secondary school to apprenticeship training, college, university or the workplace.

Andria Dipanfilo is a Guelph-based makeup artist. She graduated from The HEX makeup school. Andria worked at several businesses before she decided to become a freelance makeup artist. Andria’s work includes bridal makeup, photo shoots, costume makeup and seminar teaching.

The 10-week program is offered to Cosmetology students at John F. Ross. This program covers customer service, safety and sanitation, product knowledge, skin care and makeup application. The makeup portion of the program goes further than just the basic application of makeup and focuses on makeup through the decades, editorial and runway makeup, special FX and fantasy makeup and all occasion makeup.

The students that participate in Andria’s program receive a certificate of completion, following the successful outcome of an exam.

Andria’s makeup program allows students to dig deeper into what it would be like to have a career in this field and allows them to express their creativity. Now in its second year at John F. Ross, the program has had a lot of student success.
