March 31 is National Indigenous Languages Day

March 28, 2024

Guelph, ON — March 31 is National Indigenous Languages Day. This day is dedicated to recognizing, encouraging and celebrating the richness and diversity of Indigenous languages, while also raising awareness for the preservation and revitalization of Indigenous languages throughout the world.

At the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB) — in partnership with three other school boards — we host an Anishnaabemowin language nest for Indigenous students and families. UG secondary students can participate in an Anishnaabemowin credit (offered by the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board) and/or a Mohawk Language credit through Continuing Education.

Indigenous languages are threatened. Students, school staff, families and community members are encouraged to think about how they can support Indigenous communities in their efforts to preserve and revitalize their languages.

Schools can share how they are celebrating Indigenous languages on March 31 by tagging @UGDSB on X with #IndigenousLanguagesDay or emailing the Indigenous Education Department for a chance to win resources for their classrooms that support Indigenous languages.
