Montgomery Village PS discusses poverty with HatsOnDufferin

November 17, 2017

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – On November 17, HatsOnDufferin came to Montgomery Village Public School to drop off 100 homemade hats for students in the school.

HatsOnDufferin is a non-profit organization whose goal is to ensure that every child, person and family in Dufferin County has a hat to keep them warm this winter. HatsOnDufferin hopes that this initiative will raise awareness to otherwise unknown and unchecked poverty issues in the county.

HatsOnDufferin began as a social gathering of individuals with a passion for crocheting and quickly evolved into a socially responsible, community minded initiative.

During the assembly, the school welcomed Dufferin County Warden, Darren White, Director of Community Services, Keith Palmer and Lead Project Consultant for Headwaters Communities in Action, Shirley Boxem.

White, Palmer and Boxem spoke to the school about poverty related issues in Dufferin County and applauded the school for all the work they have done in the community.

While all the students were gathered in the gym, the school took the opportunity to honour two teachers that were recently named recipients of the Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Teaching, Marc Mailhot and Lynda Brown.

Students in Mr. Mailhot and Ms. Brown’s class presented them with the reasons they make a difference to the school and pointed out how hard they work with the GrandPals program.

The school would like to thank HatsOnDufferin for their donation and for everyone involved in the poverty awareness assembly. For more information about HatsOnDufferin and their donation to Dufferin County schools, please visit the board website
