Norwell arts students’ production marks 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge

April 10, 2017

PALMERSTON, Ontario – Youth at Norwell District Secondary School put on a production for their fellow students, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On April 6, drama teacher M. Spencer and the senior Arts Production Project class organized an assembly featuring a dramatic production and multimedia presentation, to honour those who fought at Vimy.

The whole school attended the assembly, watching as APP students acted out scenes that represented the Canadian role in the historic battle.

The goal of the project was to inspire students to think about what it means to them to be Canadian, how to embody that idea in their everyday actions, and to inspire students to be positive forces in the world.

Following the assembly, students returned to class and wrote messages to veterans and members of the local legions. The school received approximately 600 postcards through Veterans Affairs’ Postcards for Peace initiative. Some students wrote messages of peace and remembrance, while others wrote specifically to veterans, who will receive the postcards containing messages of thanks.

Also as part of the project, APP students unveiled their initiative to have a Canadian flag hanging in every classroom in the school by September 2017.

To help with that initiative, the Town of Minto has donated flags for school classrooms. The office of Perth-Wellington MP John Nater donated larger flags for the school gymnasium, as well as a Canadian flag pin for each student. The Township of Mapleton also donated Canada150 pins for students.

Through this project, the students hope to inspire others to keep in their minds what it means to be Canadian – in the classroom, the community and beyond.
