Reduce, re-use, recycle and repair – It’s Buy Nothing Day!

November 25, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – November 25 is one of the busiest shopping days in North America, which is why it has been designated Buy Nothing Day. Buy Nothing Day was originally founded in Vancouver in 1992 as a movement to combat consumerism. Since 1992, the phenomenon has spread throughout North America and into several European countries.

Several schools in the Upper Grand District School Board are participating in Buy Nothing Day, which not only sheds light on society’s habit for buying too many things, but also helps teach children how to respect the environment.

Over consuming pollutes the environment because it causes unnecessary waste when we throw out things we no longer need. A great way to fight this is by repairing or repurposing our belongings. If you have grown out of clothing, donate the old clothes and consider buying used clothing. Instead of buying books or movies, consider borrowing them from the public library.

Are you looking for ways to avoid the temptation of this busy shopping day? Consider an outdoor activity, hiking, skating or going to the park. Look into creative ways to repurpose school supplies, just because you used a binder for one subject, doesn’t mean you can’t use it again. As a family, go through household closets and gather items that can be donated. If you haven’t worn something for over a year, chances are you will never wear it again. Take out your crafting supplies and make gifts for your loved ones.
