Student conference will share “Good Food for All” message

GUELPH, Ontario – Journalist and best-selling author Sarah Elton will be the keynote speaker at a student conference in Fergus this month. The “Good Food for All” conference hopes to change the food culture in schools.
Elton will deliver a message about how youth today are viewed by the food system, outline strategies for challenging those assumptions, and share inspiring success stories from her travels.
“We’re absolutely thrilled that Sarah agreed to come to Upper Grand to share her expertise and experience with our students,” said one of the conference organizers, teacher Diane Ballantyne. Elton has written a book for kids 10-and-up, Starting from Scratch: What You Should Know about Food and Cooking. Her previous bestsellers are Consumed and Locavore. She is also well-known as the food columnist for CBC Radio’s Here and Now.
The conference aims to bring together student delegates from all 12 secondary schools in the Upper Grand District School Board, along with invited guests and students from a handful of elementary schools. It is to take place on April 27, 2015 at Centre Wellington Sportsplex, 550 Belsyde Avenue, Fergus.
Conference attendees will participate in concurrent afternoon seminars lead by university instructors, organic farmers and chefs. Topics include the importance of maintaining healthy soils, school garden design, the Slow Food movement, nutrition and cooking demonstrations.
The conference will also feature the Good Food for All Market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., located throughout the lobby and mezzanine areas of the Sportsplex. The market will be open to conference attendees, students from nearby Centre Wellington DHS, and to the community.
