The UGDSB highlighted Indigenous Education over the course of the 2018-19 school year
June 21, 2019
GUELPH, Ontario – June 21 is Indigenous Peoples Day. Many Upper Grand District School Board classrooms will be exploring and celebrating the unique heritage, diverse cultures and outstanding contributions of Indigenous Peoples on this day.
The work that the UGDSB does around Indigenous Education is much bigger than a day or month and because of that, the board is taking the opportunity to highlight some of the great work that has happened this year across the system:
- In September, the Terry James Resource Centre showcased new resources available to staff about Equity, Inclusion and Indigenous Education. Read more about this on the board website.
- In the fall, Island Lake PS participated in a collaborative project that brought together Indigenous knowledge and math. Students at the school had the opportunity to explore math while learning traditional Indigenous beading techniques.
- UGDSB students recognized Treaties Recognition Week in November with an Indigenous Arts Day. Under the direction of Indigenous Artist Shelley Niro, intermediate students from several schools participated in an arts workshop.
- In December, Guelph CVI students brought attention to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls through a visual arts project. Read about the schools Red Dress Project on the board website.
- In February, secondary Indigenous students gathered in Fergus and Alton for two Indigenous Youth Gatherings. These events allowed Indigenous students to share their voices about curriculum and identity.
- In April, students at Aberfoyle PS engaged in deep learning around social justice. Students highlighted their learning at an event at the school. Exhibits explored topics including Truth and Reconciliation, Friendship Treaty, Water Rights, and more.
- In April at the annual Turtle Island Heritage Festival, Rick Le Feuvre from the Rotary Club in Guelph presented College Heights SS student Alexis with the 2019 Rotary Indigenous Youth Award.
