Two students in UGDSB Elementary Remote Program set to publish first book

February 17, 2022

GUELPH, Ontario – What started as a passion project for two students in the Upper Grand District School Board’s (UGDSB) Elementary Remote Program (ERP) has quickly turned into an incredible opportunity.

Madelynn S. and Adhrith H. “are extremely high achievers” is how Sandra Horton – their third grade teacher – likes to describe the pair.

Madelynn and Adhrith had just finished up a previous independent project and their teacher, Horton, suggested that the class take on another, which is how the pair ended up co-writing a book together.

“The book is about a wolf that joins a clan and gives birth to a litter of pups. The chieftain doesn’t know who she has mated with and is now after her to find out. All the while, this wolf has secret mystical powers and her wishes become what is happening in the story,” wrote the pair, about their story.

A parent in the class, who is a publisher, found out about Madelynn and Adhrith’s story and offered to publish the book.

“We are currently in the midst of drawing up a contract with him so that this book can get an ISBN and become registered with the Library & Archives Canada,” said Horton.

Madelynn had read a book called Wolves of the Beyond and Adhrith loves adventure books like the Harry Potter series, which was the inspiration to write their own story.
