GUELPH, ON – The Upper Grand District School Board’s Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program had the great opportunity this year to immerse students in the world of technology through a unique Co-op program.
With the help of the Career Education Council (CEC) and the UGDSB SHSM program, several students were placed with local tech-focused companies for a Co-op term this semester. This program is available to 10 students each semester and is sponsored by Apple.
In its second year, students were placed virtually to different companies who focus on application development. Each student is then mentored and given the knowledge needed to create app. App ideas were all generated by students and based on their interests. Some of the apps created included an app to organize music and one to help with personal reminders.
At the end of this program, students travelled to Toronto, Ontario, to meet with industry experts to pitch their app ideas. Students were then given feedback on their ideas.
Next year SHSM plans to continue this program by offering it to 10 students each semester.
Congratulations to the students who created and pitched their ideas!
