GUELPH, Ontario – Canadian environmental activist, speaker, television host and author Severn Cullis-Suzuki was a guest speaker at a number of events in the Upper Grand District School Board, May 12-13, 2015.

A graduate of Yale and Victoria universities with degrees in ecology, evolutionary biology and ethnobiology, Cullis-Suzuki has spoken around the world about environmental issues, urging listeners to define their values and act with the future in mind. Severn is the daughter of Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki.

Severn Cullis-Suzuki began her day on May 12 by delivering the keynote address to H2Awesome, a one-day conference for Upper Grand students on the environmental issue of water conservation and the importance of water in our daily lives. The conference is a special event for Grade 8 students, who participated in a number of exciting, hands-on water-themed workshops that integrate curriculum expectations from a variety of subjects.

In the afternoon of the 12th Cullis-Suzuki addressed a motivational assembly at Centre Wellington District High School. Her talk touched on a number of prominent environmental issues, including the topic of student activism and how to make a difference. The assembly was promised to CWDHS after grade 9 student Hannah L. won a board-wide environmental slogan contest for her entry “Live Green. Learn Green. Go Green.”

On May 13 Cullis-Suzuki spoke at a Teacher Environmental Workshop held at the Linamar Training Centre in Guelph, inspiring environmental lead teachers in their efforts to Go Green! Teachers also learned about the board’s new Environmental Sustainability Action Plan, and the “Less Paper” campaign, brainstorming and providing ideas for advancing these initiatives.
