UGDSB Young Parent Education Program celebrates class of 2019 with graduation

June 20, 2019

GUELPH, Ontario- On June 19, students and staff from the Young Parent Education Program (YPEP) joined for a meal and celebration of the YPEP students who are graduating this year.

The YPEP has been offered through College Heights SS since 2013, in collaboration with community organizations in Guelph. YPEP runs out of the Shelldale Community Centre’s Youth Room.

The program provides academic support for pregnant teens and teen parents. Students earn credits toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma while developing an understanding of a healthy family life. Students also expand their parenting and life skills, strengthen their sense of worth and join a community of learning with other young parents.

Students are at the centre every day from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m., and are able to bring their children with them and receive childcare as needed.

This year was the largest graduating class from the YPEP with five young parents graduating, including the programs first male graduate. These students are continuing on to post-secondary studies or the workplace.

On June 19, Ms. Worgan held a BBQ for students at the Shelldale Community Centre to celebrate the graduates.
