For Immediate Release
August 14, 2018

GUELPH, Ontario – The inaugural class of the Upper Grand District School Board’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB DP) have graduated with outstanding results.

The IB DP is a two-year, academically challenging program that prepares students for success at university and beyond. The internationally recognized program prepares youth for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society.

This July, 51 students graduated from the IB DP, offered at Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute. One fifth of those students earned 40 points or more out of a possible 45 points. Student Shannon Carwana achieved a perfect score, an impressive accomplishment given that last year just 0.17% of all students who completed the IB worldwide earned a perfect score.

GCVI’s class average was 35.25, compared to the worldwide average of 29.78 points.

Graduates of GCVI’s IB program will now go on to study in a variety of postsecondary programs, including Engineering Sciences at the University of Toronto, Computer Sciences at the University of Waterloo, Fine Arts at the University of Ottawa and Law at the University of Oxford in England.

GCVI will begin accepting applications from grade 8 students wishing to enter the 2019-20 Preparatory Program following the school’s IB@GCVI information night on November 22, 2018.
