‘Welcome Neighbours’ event to connect Syrian families with local children’s authors and illustrators

For Immediate Release
September 12, 2016

GUELPH, Ontario – This September, the Upper Grand District School Board is hosting an event that will connect Syrian and other newcomer refugee families who have recently resettled in our communities with local children’s authors and illustrators.

“Welcome Neighbours” will be held on Saturday Sept. 17, 2016 at Westwood Public School in Guelph, from 2 to 4 p.m.

Thanks to the generosity of the Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin County communities, the board has recently welcomed nearly 30 Syrian refugee families and up to 60 more families are expected by the end of the year.

The board has invited our newcomer families to meet nine of the most successful and well known authors and illustrators in Canada, each of whom will share their stories and pictures with the children. Authors in attendance will include Robert Munsch, Jean Little, Eric Walters, Kathy Stinson, Jo Ellen Bogart, Janet Wilson, Lisa Dalrymple, Kira Vermond and Werner Zimmerman.

“Welcome Neighbours” is being hosted by the UGDSB in collaboration with the local authors and their publishers Annick Press, Creative Book Publishing, Orca Book Publishers, Penguin Random House and Scholastic, as well as First Book Canada and the Ontario Library Association.

Media are welcome to attend.
