Westside SS named top Dress for the Cause fundraiser for 3rd year in a row

December 13, 2017

ORANGEVILLE, Ontario – For the third year in a row, Westside Secondary School has been named the top fundraiser for the Breast Cancer Society of Canada’s (BCSC) Dress for the Cause campaign.

Since 2004, the Westside SS community has supported the cause by hosting an annual “Pink Day.” Fundraising activities are held throughout the week leading up to Pink Day, which begins with a pancake breakfast. In the afternoon, the entire school population comes to the gym, dressed head to toe in pink, to face off in a variety of competitions, including tug-of-war, free throw competitions, trivia and more.

Several staff and students shave their heads and cut off their locks, donating their hair to charities that make wigs for cancer patients.

This year, the students and staff at Westside raised $20,410 at Pink Day, making it the top Dress for the Cause fundraiser out of any other group or organization in Canada.

In honour of Westside’s contribution, BCSC will make a $5,000 donation on behalf of the school to the Headwaters Health Care Centre – a local cancer treatment centre.

“The dedication of Westside Secondary School students, faculty and administration to help find a cure for breast cancer is truly inspirational. Not only does Westside host an amazing ‘Pink Day’ fundraiser, they also enlist the support of their entire community. We are grateful to everyone who donated their time and money to Westside. Thank you for your spirit and continued support of our mission to end breast cancer,” said Kimberly Carson, CEO of BCSC.

“It’s just an incredible moment, an incredible occasion,” said Westside teacher and Pink Day coordinator Christine Kirkland. “To be able to sit here right now and say that we’ve successfully raised over $20,000 is just so surreal. It’s completely overwhelming.”

Way to go Westside!
